About me
My basketball experience
I was born and raised in a small town, Anderson, Indiana. I began playing basketball since I was about 6 years old at a public school. It was truly difficult being deaf and participating basketball with a group of hearing people. My mother found out there was a Deaf school located in Indianapolis, IN, which was an hour away from my hometown. I transferred schools and started interacting with other people who are like me and played basketball all through the years at the school then I continued at Gallaudet University, the only Deaf University in the world.
Other than Deaf club basketball there are several international level of competition such as, U18, U21, Deaflympics, World Deaf Championships, Pan American games for the Deaf. These events happens every four years at different times.
Summer 2013, I was a participant in the Deaflympics to Sofia, Bulgaria and along with my teammates we brought back home the GOLD. Again, during the summer of 2015, I was also a participant in the World Deaf Championship Games in Taoyuan, Taiwan and also brought back home the GOLD.
April 2016, at the Overseas Combine tryouts that was held in Indianapolis, IN. I enjoyed myself, but the tryouts itself was full of hearing players and I was amazed because I made it in the top 20 to compete against the other top players. Only reason it was surprising to me because I was often left out and not being able to understand what is being communicated, but having a teammate gesture and also just following what everybody else was doing was very helpful. However, that is where I knew I would struggle if I ever decided to play overseas with a group of hearing people.
I was also selected as a finalist for the Deaflympics in 2017 in Samsun, Turkey, due to unforeseen circumstances, the USA Women's Basketball team backed out and did not compete in the Deaflympics.
